This research aims to determine, based on the state of the art, the application of online psychotherapy from a cognitive-behavioral perspective. First, a historical tour of online psychotherapy is carried out; later, some concepts of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) are described; and common elements of online psychotherapy are addressed from the cognitive-behavioral, systemic family and humanistic approach. Finally, an analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the online format is developed, in order to suggest some methodological adaptations. This is a qualitative study as it delimits the object of study by reviewing bibliographic sources. Advantages associated with the adaptation of elements from the face-to-face format to the online format (synchronous and asynchronous) are identified which, together with the therapeutic alliance and code of ethics, account for the effectiveness achieved by CBT; however, disadvantages that pose limitations are also identified. It is concluded that online psychotherapy does not replace the face-to-face format, but it does represent a support tool that enables new settings for communication between patient and therapist.
